She is the daughter of mother Kathleen McNulty Rooney and her father Timothy Christopher Mara. Her father is a vice president of player evaluation for the New York Giants, and her mother is a real estate agent. She has an older sister Kate Mara, also an actress, and two brothers Conor Mara and Daniel Mara. Mara studied at Fox Lane High School and then she joined George Washington University. She also enrolled at Gallatin School of Individualized Study in New York City.
Relationships
Mara started dating film director Charlie McDowell in 2010, and the couple separated in 2016. Later, she began a relationship with actor Joaquin Phoenix in 2016, and the couple got engaged in July 2019. She gave birth to their first child a son River Phoenix in August 2020.

Rooney made her debut in her acting career with Classroom Girl’s role in the film Urban Legends Bloody Mary in 2005, and she played Jessica DeLay’s role in her first television series Law & Order Special Victims Unit in 2006. She is well known for Nancy Holbrook’s role in the film A Nightmare on Elm Street in 2010, and she is also popular as Lisbeth Salander in the movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2011. Mara also starred as Tiger Lily in the movie Pan in 2015, and she portrayed Erica Albright’s role in the film The Social Network in 2010. She appeared as Emily Taylor in the film Side Effects in 2013.
