Her father also worked as a vice president of global communications for the EMC Corporation, and then as CEO of a biotech startup. Slate has an older sister Abigail Slate and a younger sister Stacey Slate. She attended Milton Academy and then she joined Columbia University.

She gained fame for providing the voice of Marcel’s character role in the animated film series Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. She is also popular as Donna Stern’s role in the movie Obvious Child in 2014, and she appeared as Stella in the television series Bored to Death from 2009 to 2010. Slate portrayed Mona-Lisa Saperstein’s role in the television sitcom Parks and Recreation from 2013 to 2017.
